Questions on Training Center Operations: |
Do you recommend coin operated machines? |
Coin operated machines are not good for teaching and are limited to rental by the pitch. This system is very expensive as you will need ball retrieval systems with sloping floors. Getting permits that meet all codes and regulations will be necessary with all elevated floors. These cages are also not portable if a business needed to relocate. These types of cages are typically found in Fun Centers as opposed to training centers. There are four main companies that offer this equipment, ABC ( http://www.battingcages.com), ATEC, MasterPitch, and Amusement Products.
The non-coin operated cages are completely portable and changeable, can be both rented by time and used as a teaching station. |
They are much more affordable because all additional construction is eliminated (sloping floors) and complicated retrieval systems are not needed.
How about feeders? |
Non-coin operated cages can be set up for either hand feeding (requires two people) or ball feeders that will provide continuous hitting (150 baseball / 75 soft balls). Sports Attack feeders are ready for use out of the box. Coin-operated feeders need special set-up, and expensive electrical and operational work.
Do cages have to be 70 FT. long? No, cages do not have to be 70 Ft. long. Most training and hitting is done at shorter distances. What dictates the space is often the size of the building. The length of the cage is generally from a distance of 45ft. to 70 ft. |

How do most centers work? |
Most centers set up five to eight cages with one or two of them dedicated to baseball, one or two to softball and the rest convertible. The core of the business is hitting instruction offered on an individual basis or group instruction. Pitching instruction is much more seasonal but can also provide a profit stream during the peak training seasons. Some centers provide catching and fielding instruction. In addition to instruction, most centers rent the cages by the hour or half hour to leagues, teams or individuals. |
Are training centers generally open to the public? |
Most training centers, due to the size and capital investment required, are open to the general public. However, some are established by leagues, especially travel teams, for their exclusive use, but these facilities typically are smaller operations with much fewer cages. Use of such training centers are a part of the dues paid to play on the team.
Are there sources of revenue (profit centers) other than just the machines? Many centers rely on Pro Shops and birthday party programs for additional income. Due to the portability of some pitching machines (both Attack machines), machines can also be rented for use outside the facility for special events like try-outs, clinics, or corporate parties. |
If I have an existing commercial operation, including coin-operated with an automated retrieval system, can I still consider switching to Hack Attack machines? |
| |
Absolutely! Call us and we can discuss the details of your center.
What can I do that will set me apart from the competition? |
a. Our Junior Hack Attack will convert to throw a 7 ˝” ball that will enable you to establish a vision training station. (Important: smaller ball may require a smaller mesh netting, such as golf netting.)
b. Set up a cage with a machine up close for hand-quickness drills
c. You can instruct using both the right and left-handed breaking pitches when using the Attack machines.
d. Centers that have non-coin operated cages (due to machine portability) can easily change the facility to dedicate a particular area to another sport (volleyball, soccer, basketball, etc.) in order to attract a broader client base.
